Once upon a time there was a handsome young man who was diagnosed with dyslexia. He struggled to identify with others and they often misunderstood him.
When he started elementary school he was adjusting well. However his parents noticed he was having difficulty with reading assignments. This became a recurrent concern at parent-teacher conferences.
Worried that their child might fall behind, his parents asked the school for resources that would aid in their son’s academic success. Unfortunately the teachers did not seem to be properly equipped to provide the support that their son needed.
The young man was becoming uninterested in anything academic, and his parents were becoming disheartened because of the situation. So they began seeking help outside of the school system.
They discovered the true Orton-Gillingham Method, tailored specifically to those gifted with dyslexia, and they began to see the young man engaging and making progress.
By the time he reached middle school, the young man was dealing with new challenges, like bullying and exclusion.
He even dealt with discrimination from some of his teachers because there was inadequate patience provided for his academic needs.
After a few meetings with the school and their son’s tutors, his parents soon discovered that when the young man felt emotionally, physically and intellectually safe, he was more than capable of anything he set his mind to.
His teachers were given specific guidelines to assist with interacting with the young man, and the parents empowered their son to confidently interact with others.
They realized tutoring alone was not the solution. Having access to the supportive community they had cultivated for their son played an integral role in his development and ability to express himself more fully.
This young man is a hopeful example to other neurodivergent children and adults. His parents are proud of their son, who is being empowered to embrace his greatness and confidently continue his new journey of self expression.
And the young man is living confidently ever after.
